In a Constant State of Nostalgia... ALBUM - Coming 2019
I was born 4.30am - 16th, August 19** - Taupo Hospital, New Zealand.
Age 2 - 9 years: Encouraged and (sometimes) paid by Nanna Rose to sing at birthdays, cuppa tea visits, and other special occasions.
Earliest musical influences (from 2 years old):
- Teenage Sisters: Pearl Jam - Ten and Nirvana played next to my bedroom.
- Dad-daughter adventures - Eric Clapton MTV Unplugged played on repeat.
- Mum's disco, RnB, 60's-70's fetish - Ike & Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder, Billie Holiday in the evening.
Age 5: Asch enthusiastically starts school. First report card comments: “Asch is very capable... she shows signs of independence… has bossy tendencies”.
Age 5: Goes to first social (aka DISCO), has no clue how to dance. Copies dance moves, puts them in her pocket to take away.
Attending the school Te Kura O Te Whakarewarewa. School curriculum is taught in Te Reo Maori (native language to New Zealand), Asch is by Maori performing arts and a modern Maori world view.
Age 6: Given a nylon string guitar, learns G, D and A and soon after forgets...
Age 7, Custody battle. Two homes. Great character building.
Age 7, the discovery of cassette player recording - Blows MIND. Tape recording oneself talking and singing with 1980’s organ → Teased at school because of an accidental mixtape switch.
Dancing in the mirror to Will Smith, the Grease soundtrack, Spice Girls, Celine Dion, S Club 7 and other radio hits on a daily basis. Pop dominates mind, body and soul.
Notoriously known for dancing like a champ at family gatherings → A repertoire of dance moves collected as of 1995 disco.
Music enthusiast older sister works at record store and brings home: Prince, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, The Cranberries, Smashing Pumpkins, Rhythm Volumes.. Dance moves improve through the roof.
Lead school room Kapa Haka group at school assembly - A massive case of stage fright → faces back of wall. Discovers knee caps shake profusely in a state of intense angst.
Age 12: Nelly - Country Grammar, j.LO, Nelly Furtado, Alien Ant Farm, Fat Joe, Shakira.
Age 13: Moved to Tasmania. Great character building.
Age 14: Starts to inhale: The Cranberries, Live, Smashing Pumpkins, Bryan Adams, Jon Bon Jovi, The Foo Fighters, Guns N Roses, Barenaked Ladies, Counting Crows, Jimmy Barnes, The Clash, Triple J mixtapes, Talking Heads, Hole, Patti Smith, Kate Bush.
Hears Missy Higgins ‘Scar’ on the school bus: Picks up someone’s guitar and learns to play it.
First sings in front of sister and friends: Weekly Tuesday night gathering → Features roast dinner, Asch’s 3 songs sung live on repeat --> enthusiastic small audience of early twenty year olds clap profusely.
Age 15: Moves back to NZ. Plays Rockiest + Pacifica.
Age 16: Discovers Arctic Monkeys. Gets bounced at Arctic Monkeys concert. Argues with bouncer. Unsuccessful. Makes a run for it into the crowd, Successful.
The Kooks, Hole, Muse, Kings of Leon, Smashing Pumpkins, The Sex Pistols, Talking Heads: Escaping school and boarding house, tunes in new car.
Participates heavily in Performing Arts at high school. First place in regional Manu Korero and Stage Challenge. Mixture of healthy outspokenness, arrogance, boredom, restlessness and a love for art and self-expression.
Lead in school musical: Evolution of dance moves collected as of 1995 disco come into peak.
Awarded trophy for “Enhancing School Life”.
Completely outgrown school life. Ants in pants.
Restlessness, unlearning, growth and music --> Late 60’s and early 70’s music --> Life experience, old experience --> Travelling in my van - Gigging --> Pubs, clubs, cafe's, bars --> Meeting interesting and uninteresting people --> Expressive, non-expressive --> Writing and recording music --> Late night gigs, afternoon gigs --> Gigging constantly.
Preparing for new single release of 'HIGH' and album "In a constant state of nostalgia" due for release in 2019.
